system error perks

I've become so lazy writing and uploading pics directly from my iphone,
lying on the couch,
in bed,
in the van,
on the pot...
Now that there's some glitch with the program or something,
I'm remembering sending pictures through my email,
downloading them onto the computer,
and then uploading them onto the blog,
then writing words inbetween the photos.
All the time sitting in this cold a$$ chair.
Holey Chit.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Lee Moses - Bad Girl
just a bad a$$ song
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
One thing I have missed,
is being able to post up song flicks,
surrounded by a cranked vintage 4-speaker stereo system.
So sweet.
While I'm trying to figure out the logistics of what a system error 403 is,
check this tune out its plain cool.

Percolated

Months ago a friend Sloppy declared he'd make me the best cup of coffee.
Guess he forgot I dropped joe cold turkey.
Not one to give up,
we settled on the best cup of tea.
He brought out his old percolator,
and I was hooked.
*************************************
LEE MOSES - HEY JOE
Easily one of the best versions.
*************************************
It took all summer to find one!
I thought they'd be throw away common.
Little did I realize the cult following of these workhorses.
Last week I finally found a small aluminum one at a dead ladies estate sale - $3!!
A little TMI back story here.
My painter friend How saw my daily green tea bag ritual.
I'd rebrew it by adding water throughout the day.
Like a crack dealer,
he gave up a can of the Kings Series oolong tea.
Super smooth and really packed a punch.
His brew method wasn't as refined.
Throw some tea in a cup and drink it.
The rolled balls would unfurl and fill up the cup!
Once I realized how expensive the 403 Kings Blend was,
I searched good old eBay and found a thriving tea trade.
With names like Red Robe, Iron Goddess, Iron Monk, Dong Ding...
I had to try these different varieties,
at $1-2 a bag how could I not.
Some are balls of rolled leaves,
some are open leaves,
each has a different flavor.
Yeah quite the connoisseur!
I've found that with the percolator,
I can make a 4 cup pot...
and by the time it's done have either lunch or breakfast made.
Guess this is how rituals begin,
and a good way to get chit done.
Way better than standing in line at the coffee shop.

Little Lady

Had a fun time the other evening cruising through mission beach.
Instead of rushing through to get home for dinner,
we took a pit stop.
*************************************************
Here's another pit stop,
just like old times.

Chico Hamilton - Lady Gabor
Hasn't been easy to add tunes in with the blogging lately,
but ya gotta check this one out.
Just enough crazy mixed in with the mellow.
Guys rockin the flute!

Guess Macey had never checked out the rollercoaster and rides of Belmont park.
I forget how many memories can be made in even a half hour.
No wonder all the tourists flock to this location.
Good times!

No more holey chit

At one point I thought it would be cool to leave a couple rust spots on the 40.
This was more recent as I'm letting on,
As I changed my mind last Wednesday.
Maybe it was because I've got a vague memory of how far this has come,
That these last spots are nothing compared to how bad it was,
Or maybe it's cause I was too lazy to start more sheetmetal work.
Whatever the case the tables were turned last week,
And the coupe was dismantled even further.
Removing the running boards revealed the hidden mess.
I tried not to stray too far from the original build theme,
So a scrap piece of sheetmetal was used to make the patch.
A couple minutes later and voila,
A couple feet of welding is added to the STD list.

How did I try to talk myself into leaving that rusty hole on there?
The only casualty so far was that same finger I smashed months ago.
Seems like I'm constantly reminded that the grinder will always win.
This happened while grinding behind the fender,
And wouldn't have happened if I'd removed the front wheel.
Yeah I could've worn gloves,
But then they would've been ruined!
*******************************************************
oldies month!!
I guess I'm clueless cause this isn't who I thought sang this song,
really I never knew!
Originally offered to Aretha Franklin but passed to
Dusty Springfield - Son of a Preacher Man
*******************************************************
Never mind that,
There was still an hour or two left of daylight.

Now there was no turning back.
This time a thicker plate was used.
The secondary backing plate is what sponges up the moisture,
And we don't want someone to have to do this 70 years from now!
Just like clockwork,
The night showed up and called it a day.
I've now added 7 more corners like this on my STD list.

brown nose

Wow I can't believe it's already February.
I found out I was still tagging pictures 2013!
And guess what?
Now that a year has passed,
it's time for "oldies month"!
not metal finished

********************************************
I've got to kick it off with one of the top favorites here...
the floaters...float on...

So smooth...so good...
**************************************************
big brown nose

This saturday marked a big step in the tres huevos game.
The hood was hammered out a little,
smoothed over a little with some evercoat filler,
and completed with a thick coat of brown epoxy.
It'll still needs a little fine tune smoothing,
but that constant nagging feeling seeing a hole is finally gone.

I'm hoping that that pie-cut or section was enough.
It looks a little pinnochio-ish.
If all goes as planned,
the hood will only be on there on the cold month or two.
Now time to figure out that grille.

the land of make believe - v.iii

Back in the old days we were fortunate to have a role model.
A man that took it upon himself,
to teach kids to be neighborly.
private security

Most of you guys will remember the song.
If you're like me,
it's like hanging out with an old friend,
ok more like an old teacher.
Yeah there were some creepy parts,
like the land of make believe...

The important part is Mr Rogers' goal was simple.
Live in a community.
Love what you do.
Respect other people.

So where to start.
This is a story of how we missed the Denver/Charger playoff game,
or it can be a story of how skateboarding is not a crime,
or it can be a story of how to not be a good neighbor,
or it can be a story of don't cry wolf.
jakob's grind box

It all started with Jakob wanting to build a grind box for skating.
He's learned to be so handy with tools,
that all I'll do is the cutting with the circle saw.
Jakob Perich - 2013

Not that he can't cut,
he squared up the xmas tree with the sawzall!
Anyway by 2pm the box was done,
and he was antsy to try it out.
Fortunately the Chargers had a weak start,
so there was no rush to watch the game.
grind box

After less than half hour he was bushed.
The olly-ing wore him out quick.
personal neighborhood security force

Next thing we know,
the cops are knocking at our door.

You may remember our little melodrama from last September.
Since then all had been relatively mellow.
That's kind of what happens when you know there is a gas leak,
you don't play with matches right?
*Unless you add the couple visits from code enforcement,
when the officer was almost embarrassed to waste both our time.

The policemen's take on it was the same as Mr. Rogers.

Kids playing at 3:00pm on a Sunday...
um...let's talk about cars.

On a funny note,
they actually had gone door to door,
trying to find out whose house the complaint was about.

We're talking 3 police cars and 4-5 policemen,
walking around the neighborhood,
trying to solve a noise complaint  on a sunday afternoon,
trying to discern among the cheers from the football game parties,
and the constant jet planes overhead.
wasted resources

After the policemen left,
I finished up the oil change I was doing on the van,
while listening to the Charger game on the radio.
It was getting good they made 3 touchdowns that last quarter.
The plan was to watch the tail end at my grandmothers house up the street,
the same thing we had done the past two games.

Well this is where I screwed up,
and I blame it on Mr Rogers.
I've got a habit of talking to our neighbors.
That is just what kind of tight knit neighborhood it is.
If we needed a cup of sugar,
all we'd have to do is ask.
If someone is bugging you,
just ask them to stop!

Anyway like I said this is where I screwed up.
At this time the noise complaint was considered anonymous.
When our neighbor came out,
I said something like "nice try"...
At this point it could have meant anything - like the chargers rallying back,
but it was obvious when he replied "...if you could keep your kids quiet..."
All I could do was shrug my shoulders.
What can you say when you get the staredown from twitchy-face guy,
that still likes to dress up in a baseball uniform.
Dang it why couldn't I keep my mouth shut!
neighborhood protection

So now I'm rushing to watch the tail end of the game.
And who shows up 20 minutes later...
...again three cop cars.
This time they are next door.
(I guess it was threatening that I tried to speak to the guy.)
I've never heard cops reprimand complainers before,
but it was validating to know that kids skateboarding is not illegal.
I'm imagining it is tough as in an HOA neighborhood,
there are security goons in golf carts that do this type of work.

Meanwhile we missed the end of the game,
and the police were annoyed they were missing potential DUIs from the SD loss.
Nothing like a waste of resources!

The days after were a little tense.
The kids were understandably bummed.
What parent calls the police on a 12 year old child?
What kind of parents think they are role models,
by showing their own kids it is correct to call the police?
This is not what Mr Rogers would have done.
WWMRD?

We were buoyed by that close knit neighborhood I mentioned earlier.
At least 7 households came to us with their support in the days after.
It meant alot to hear we weren't the nuisance neighbors.
Copies of the police reports were even more amusing!

Now if we could just afford a big effing fence!

MMW autopilot

Two weeks ago was Jakob's birthday.
He waited patiently for swap meet time,
and of all things he picked out a cheapy skateboard blank.
This was a concession to him not getting one of those plastic Penny boards.
Why follow a trend right?
Jakob Perich - 2013 - never bored-never board

He had this wacky idea of painting it with splash graphics,
something from an era that I lived in that had happily passed by.
Well dang it if I didn't get a series of "how to" pics,
as he figured out the method with the help of the internet.
I was amazed how well it turned out!

You can see he did a basic sunburst background,
then with a dish soap overlay got the black splash shadow.
See why I take so many pictures,
that definition doesn't make any sense!
clearance

What was I doing that was so important?
Well I was trying to eliminate this nastiness underneath the green 40,
which meant greasy hands don't touch the new iphone!

As time has gone by,
the suspension had begun to sag.
This is typical as the leaf springs learn how to hold the weight.
The side effect was the radius rods smashing the transmission pan!
Awesome!
Good thing it was sheetmetal as it basically conformed around the links.
stool time

The fix was easy,
a couple 3/8" aluminum spacers to raise the engine and transmission.
The radius rods pivot on that clamped ball,
so there isn't a huge amount of space needed for the first foot or so,
as this suspension has maybe an inch of upward travel.
custom grip tape templates

Meanwhile Jakob had made a design for his custom grip tape.
He's learning templates are key to the fabrication process!

▶ Medeski, Martin and Wood - Austin, TX, 1996-04-13 - YouTube

As the day progressed into evening,
neither of us could stop with our projects,
pushed by our desire to see an end result,
In the background this crazy music would have derailed many others,
but in our case it was like fuel to the fire,
both of us in the zone.
Get out of our way!
team perich

While he finished his deck,
I made templates for a temporary floorboard.
rat rod road sign floor

Some day I'll make a real tranny hump and do it right,
but these plates will work for now.
No more lost wrenches, change and screwdrivers falling down this hole!
holey chit

In true Perich Brothers fashion we finished by dinnertime.
Pretty wild for a 12 year old kids first try at a custom grip tape!
stance socks and wavy tape

Don't you think this is better than a Penny board?

green flash

For Jakob's birthday we went down to Sunset Cliffs,
get the kids out in the elements and some fresh air.
perich brothers and sister - jaxon, jakob, macey - 2013

We went down to a spot that I used to venture around all the time,
and of course the tide was a little high to go for a beach trek.
cliff drummers

Instead we hiked around the cliffs,
and were drawn to these drummers that had set up in a canyon.
They were good enough to not detract from the surroundings!

Santana - Revelations - live chicago 1977

Here's the soundtrack to our following little adventure.
Starts out too mellow and goes wacky at the end!
*****************************************************

sandy

We had fun,
but I realized how rare it was that we got away from our house, projects,
to just hang out at a place where many people would love to be.
Another thing I realized was the kids minimal understanding of the tide.
With the new Iphone I could have checked it instantly.
sunset cliffs panorama

So the next week before the time change we were sitting around,
almost close to 5,
and *click* we rallied up to get out of the house.
This time I had secretly checked the tide,
and knew the perfect spot for a quick getaway.
sunset cliffs panorama

The kids were a little grumpy and had no idea where we were headed.
Please not another trip to the hardware store!
This time we went down the sketchy stairway to the beach,
and had about an hour to cruise around.
sunset

Nowadays most people think the green flash is a beer company.
If you're from PL or OB than you know its the rare blip of color right after the sunset.
With the tide rising the kids were more aware of getting stuck on the beach.
Moving water always gives that sense of adventure.
rocks

The kids masterfully hopped the rocks and we made it too the stairway.
Luckily proved to the kids that nobody would take our shoes!
