MMW autopilot

Two weeks ago was Jakob's birthday.
He waited patiently for swap meet time,
and of all things he picked out a cheapy skateboard blank.
This was a concession to him not getting one of those plastic Penny boards.
Why follow a trend right?
Jakob Perich - 2013 - never bored-never board

He had this wacky idea of painting it with splash graphics,
something from an era that I lived in that had happily passed by.
Well dang it if I didn't get a series of "how to" pics,
as he figured out the method with the help of the internet.
I was amazed how well it turned out!

You can see he did a basic sunburst background,
then with a dish soap overlay got the black splash shadow.
See why I take so many pictures,
that definition doesn't make any sense!
clearance

What was I doing that was so important?
Well I was trying to eliminate this nastiness underneath the green 40,
which meant greasy hands don't touch the new iphone!

As time has gone by,
the suspension had begun to sag.
This is typical as the leaf springs learn how to hold the weight.
The side effect was the radius rods smashing the transmission pan!
Awesome!
Good thing it was sheetmetal as it basically conformed around the links.
stool time

The fix was easy,
a couple 3/8" aluminum spacers to raise the engine and transmission.
The radius rods pivot on that clamped ball,
so there isn't a huge amount of space needed for the first foot or so,
as this suspension has maybe an inch of upward travel.
custom grip tape templates

Meanwhile Jakob had made a design for his custom grip tape.
He's learning templates are key to the fabrication process!

As the day progressed into evening,
neither of us could stop with our projects,
pushed by our desire to see an end result,
In the background this crazy music would have derailed many others,
but in our case it was like fuel to the fire,
both of us in the zone.
Get out of our way!
team perich

While he finished his deck,
I made templates for a temporary floorboard.
rat rod road sign floor

Some day I'll make a real tranny hump and do it right,
but these plates will work for now.
No more lost wrenches, change and screwdrivers falling down this hole!
holey chit

In true Perich Brothers fashion we finished by dinnertime.
Pretty wild for a 12 year old kids first try at a custom grip tape!
stance socks and wavy tape

Don't you think this is better than a Penny board?

bike time vii revisited - America's Most Beautiful Stingray

This post has been a long time coming,
and before I get caught in a pulp fiction like timeline,
I've got to get it on here.
Besides,
Jaxon has been patiently waiting his turn on the PB&S queue.
hot dog schwinn stingray - ketchup & mustard - 2013

Here it is in all it's cellphone glory.
Almost 2 years ago this was the subject of bike time 7...
perich brothers (and sister): bike time vii - beater schwinn stingray
Back then this was a survivor stingray.
While it lacked in beauty,
this was one solid machine.
hot dog schwinn stingray - ketchup & mustard - 2011

WOW!
Yep that is the same bike.
Come with me and see what's been going on in Jaxon Land.

Our 4th song for Oldies Month -
The Floaters - Float On - 1977
This has got to be the baddest song on the planet.
We're all hooked on it as a repeater,
it's one of those mellow soul tunes that has the power to calm a house with 3 kids.

The Floaters - Float On (Extended Version) 1977 - YouTube

If you really want to kick it down a notch,
the 12 minute extended version is it.
So smooth.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Okay where to begin.
Last April Jaxon had the wild hair to clean up the old Hot Dog.
He carefully stripped it down and tediously razor-bladed all the old rust.
As a bonus for his good grades,
my Dad had the paint done at El Dorado Sandblasting.
stashed

Many months went by,
with the shop move we didn't get much done.
This was a good time to gather some good parts.
kitchen work bench

After summer everything was ready to go.
Talk about patience!
Actually this was late october.
Jaxon Perich - project stingray

During this time something happened and Jaxon grew a foot taller.
No more little poopee pants!
Jaxon and his stingray

He really took to the assembly well.
It was tough for me to hold back,
I just gave him some pointers and it was his time to learn.
candy apple red powder coat

The frame was powder coated a super bitchin candy apple red.
Together with the yellow forks and chainguard,
it's an updated version of the original color scheme.
That red is truly amazing and has given me evil thoughts for future projects.
badge stash

This build deserved a good badge.
Even though this isn't the correct color or year,
it was the best one and fit the custom resto-look.
Shiny Schwinn Stingray

I'm glad we have the before and after pictures.
Beater Schwinn Stingray

Hard to believe it's the same bike,
with almost all the same parts.
Many hours cleaning and scraping to make them shine.
almost done

We tried to find some decals (pronounced dickles)
and they seemed way overpriced.
I had some repops stashed away from ages ago,
and we found the sticker lady at the swap meet could
copy them in any color.
They came out great and were a way better deal,
$8 for 2 sets (different reds just in case)
versus the $24 the ebay guy wanted!
dickles

All that time building those models definitely paid off.
As you can see it somehow became a house bike!
jaxon and his decals

The stickers really finished the bike off.
We still need to place the NOS down-tube water transfer decal,
but without a clear coat it will just flake off.
Jaxon's Stingray

Here's a good shot to see how much this thing had changed.
This was all back in November.
old hot dog stingray

Since then,
the front rim was replaced with the original S-7,
and some repop ape hangers were swapped out.
ketchup & mustard schwinn stingray

Now that the bike is so nice,
the trap has been set.
It's not as fun to thrash around!
They have gone on some good couple mile rides,
but it's not the leave it outside beater of old.
Ultimate kids room decoration

We found the perfect spot in the house,
hanging at the end of his bed from the ceiling.
Now he can drift off to sleep with his bike in view.

STP #43

Just what I needed - more stickers.
How could I pass these up?
richard petty - five time champion-daytona 500

I didn't expect them to be this huge!
richard petty's glasses?

These were from some time after 1974,
cause that's when he won the race.
I'm hoping the sticker is still sticky.

This was when guys transported the cars on the backs of flatbed trucks.
A credit card street rod has more technology than most cars on the track!

These 70's Dodge Chargers & Plymouth Roadrunners
were the toughest looking (and performing) out there by far.
Would be cool to have a VINTAGE NASCAR races,
I'd actually consider watching them!
petty and baker

Lotsa information on this guys site ...
Petty Charger
Check out the peace sign on the headrest,
I guess the builders trademark.
addict

Couldn't stop at one.
The guy has a few more check ebay!

high performance van

I've been really good about buying frivolous stuff on craigslist or ebay,
but when these popped up I lost all control.
parnelli jones love van

I didn't know that Parnelli Jones was a big van guy back then!
At the time I'm sure they would do anything to attract tire customers,
and the van craze was huge.
This style ford van was only from 67-75 so this sticker is a bit old.

I grew up with one of these as a kid,
and gotta look for some pics.
It was a dirty yellow tan with red rims,
no windows and a hot running 289.
Total love machine!
Hey it was the early 70's what do you expect!
big oly ford bronco

Would have been cool to see them make a baja 1000 van instead!
addict!

Of course I couldn't resist and bought all the guy had!
They're almost too nice to use though...
What can I say, I love vans!
