Klipsch Chorus + JBL L200 =

Lots has happened in the past couple months.

Before the dust settled,

it felt best to kick it up and whip out a quickee project.

Car, bike, amp, speaker...

Let's pick the least important on the list!

Years ago we scored some Klipsch Chorus speakers.

I tried to like them.

They had no bass.

Specs quoted 45 hz,

and cranking to get low notes

made the mids and highs too blaring.

I studied up,

and found that the drivers needed a bigger cabinet.

The lack of space choked the big 15" woofer.

It felt meant to be to find some pirated

JBL L200 cabinets,

a volume roughly 1200 cubic inches higher.

Sadly the JBL drivers were worth more in higher end models.

Likewise,

the same Chorus drivers are used in the bigger Cornwall box,

creating a much more balanced sound.

You're not a hot rodder if ya can't tear up

a perfect stock item and make it better.

The Chorus k-48-k woofer is a monster.

A commercial grade 15" woofer with a huge magnet,

that basically needed a bigger carburetor.

We mocked up the woofer in the cab

and noticed an immediate difference.

Time to cut and paste.

The change was so easy,

it seemed the engineers planned for a future swap.

They learned from the ford and chevy guys.

Side by side there was no going back.

The wife liked the slanted front,

and they breathed bass in the room.

It was tougher to cut up the JBL's,

but not really.

The 2-way L200's have a splintered following,

and are commonly modified with a tweeter,

and a 3-way crossover.

This makes them comparable to the L300 summit,

which are triple the going price,

although they'll never be real L300's.

Measure, cut, file, clean.

My wood handiwork was rushed and sloppy,

only you readers will ever know!

The JBL recipe was exactly the opposite of Klipsch.

JBL uses veneered sawdust wood-mdf,

and really high quality drivers.

Klipsch used real birch plywood,

and borderline sufficient drivers.

There's a huge cult following for both,

it's borderline ridiculous to read forum know it alls.

Funny enough the swap is usually the exact opposite,

JBL drivers in Klipsch boxes!

I rushed the project a few hours after work for about a week,

and wow it was so worth it.

The bass goes down easily to the mid-30hz range,

necessary for the grateful dead Phil bombs.

Next will be some grills

 and maybe those trippy lens shade covers,

and a front paint would be nice.

They sound so good it will be hard to take them apart again!

I've been lucky for the past couple weeks now.

Sure there's a payoff that I'm not getting,
but I'm not complaining.
Funny thing is the van had sat so long,
I didn't even realize the dome lights were left on killing the battery.

I've been having some technical difficulties,
the new iphone 5c is more powerful than our 6 year old mac mini,
and I'm still stuck on the droid way of doing things.
Not to fret you'll be overloaded with chit pretty quick.

perich toy shop - 1989

I found a couple boxes of pictures the other day,

and man did it bring back some memories.

Now that I've figured out how to use our scanner,

you guys are gonna get all kindsa throwbacks from the predigital age!

Here we've got my old '64 VW baja bug,

an early cut down not a fiberglass kit.

Than there is the most perfect '30/31 ford coupe project.

Check out the gasser chromed front axle.

Wonder if that's on the road now?

Last but not least is the stripped down shovelhead.

That was a family friends bagger bike,

that turned into a cool semi-chopper,

then ended up as a pile of melted steel and aluminum.

I'll tell that story when I find the better picture!

Anyway expect some periodic blasts from the past!

Here's a simple memory test for any wannabe toilet mechanic.

You'd think this be a no-brainer.
The kids and I spent a couple minutes trying to figure out if we had
the long or short toilet seat.
With all the time spent on one it seems like it'd be obvious!

Well we did pick the right size - short,
but it ended up being cracked.
While standing in line to exchange it,
another guy had bought the wrong size!

POW BAM!!

Nothing like waking up at 5 in the morning to a series of explosions.
Some kids decided to use our alley as a base for their fireworks display.
Hard not to get jolted out of bed.
Weird how there was a couple seconds when my brain was deciphering the situation.
At first I was thinking exploding gas cans, some weird alley shootout,
maybe the green 40 was getting pulled off the jack stands...

A look out the window and it was obviously just a box of fireworks,
coincidentally lit near our garage.
Nothing else was disturbed so not worth chasing after the culprits.
Why they would want to pop these off in a tight alley,
instead of a nice open street was curious.
You'd figure it would be fun to be able to view the light show.

For a minute I thought maybe it was one of the kids pack of friends.
That would be something fun to do to a buddy, right?
Too bad neither of the boys woke up to enjoy it.

I found a way to get back to sleep,
and wow what a buzz the neighborhood had when I woke up!

Tip of the night #1-
keep jumper cables in your car.

What was supposed to be a quick trip to the grocery store,
ended up being an unplanned family outing,
on the coldest night we've had,
right before the kids bedtime.

Usually we have jumper cables stashed amongst all the junk,
but of course we had super cleaned the cars.
So the 4 sets I've got were all at home.
Sweet.
At least it was an easy fix as the battery cable was loose.

We were out on a family cruise and dang if this thing was the coolest car on the road.
Why I like old patina better than shiny cars I can't say.
This thing was even right hand drive,
and about as low as you can get.

The garage is a little tied up right now,
so old Chief has been parked out in the street.
In a way it's about time,
as it is a good excuse to drive around.

The funny thing is I always forget that to other people,
it's not normal to see an old hot rod.
In the past week,
I've met a couple neighbors or friends of neighbors,
just to talk about the old car.
Most don't have a clue to what it is,
but they like it and don't mind if it sets off their car alarms.
OK that's only one guy.

A quick story though that actually gave me the idea to type.

Jaxon & I drove down to the post office,
and on the way out there was an older gentleman checking out the car.
He said "in my day this was called a Hot Rod!"
I told him, "yep that's what I call it now...so did you have one?"
He said, "Well not really but my first car was a model A,
and the bearings were so shot the babbits were worn down to the metal.
My dad said to put bacon rinds in the caps to fill the gap.
Every sunday I would put some bacon rinds in there,
which would get me about 50 miles.
Enough to get to work and hopefully a date on friday or saturday!"

He stuck around to hear the engine roar,
and you could tell our couple minutes brought back a bunch of memories.

I try to stay neutral on this blog about politics and religion.
It's the sure fire way to splash all the water out of a stagnant pond.
I'm fortunate that me and the wife can discuss and agree on things!

Fortunately we don't have cable to be forced to hear all the BS.
I mean what's more important,
the issues,
or a group of random TV people talking about 4 words said spur of the moment!

Whichever way you lean,
I think it is important to get out and vote.
Even if you get all your news from the Daily Show.
There is much more on the ballot then the big presidential 270.
All the offices and measures have an effect on how you want your way of life.
So put voting on top of your STD list (shit to do!)

I am totally amazed.
Last week I bitched and complained at how long I had to sit in line.
Really it wasn't that bad for a friday with no appointment,
I was just unprepared, hungry and a little antsy.

Well today I got the new drivers license in the mail.
8 days!
I'm really impressed at the speed,
and I don't look like an ex-con!
My YOM (year of manufacture) plates for the 40 took almost 3 months to clear,
so I was expecting at least a couple weeks.

If you haven't gotten one of these SecureCard's yet,
you'll be in for a surprise.
There's a ton of raised and embossed information like birthdays and signature,
and even a way more advanced q-code like scanning bar.

Of course this is all for chit as I've posted this picture up.
Since new computer programs are like episodes of CSI Miami,
where they can somehow discern a bar code from a liquor store video grab.
Yeah my wife likes the show what can I say!

My original intent with the car was to make it a race car.
Something happened along the way,
maybe it was the fact that it costs alot of money,
maybe it was the fact I'm not as focused as a real racer should be.
Whatever the case,
yesterday I smudged a tube of "boat life" on all the bottom seams.
It's a marine grade sealant,
so should be perfect as a seam sealer in a car.
