STP #43

Just what I needed - more stickers.
How could I pass these up?
richard petty - five time champion-daytona 500

I didn't expect them to be this huge!
richard petty's glasses?

These were from some time after 1974,
cause that's when he won the race.
I'm hoping the sticker is still sticky.

This was when guys transported the cars on the backs of flatbed trucks.
A credit card street rod has more technology than most cars on the track!

These 70's Dodge Chargers & Plymouth Roadrunners
were the toughest looking (and performing) out there by far.
Would be cool to have a VINTAGE NASCAR races,
I'd actually consider watching them!

Lotsa information on this guys site ...

Check out the peace sign on the headrest,

Couldn't stop at one.

mooneyes 2012 xmas lot (vii)

Last time I wrote we were at the Vons parking lot...
perich brothers (and sister): pre-mooneyes marathon (viii)
Sloppy and I jumped onto the freeway shanker style,
and headed up to the Irwindale Speedway.
I was expecting to see a caravan of hot rods and customs driving up,
but there was only one street rodded 40 sedan the whole way.
We weren't even that late it was still before 7am.
Well we got to the exit and there were a TON of cars.
We didn't preregister,
so had to find our way to the commoner entrance.
mooneyes xmas 2012

We finagled our way to the front of the line,
one of the benefits of having no fan and a steamy radiator.
Then parked in the suburbia lot away from cockfight central.
29 ford roadster pickups
sophorn "sloppy" sin (low) & travis perich (high)

Sloppy's car is bitchin.
It's one of the earlier RPU's with the tire higher then the bed.
Pat Lash and him really solidified the nor-cal lower then low look.
lowrider

We took a walk and I had no idea the show was this big.
Last Mooneyes show I went to was at the police department parking lot,
which was years ago.
This show had over a thousand cars.
In a cool way there was no real focus on one certain type.
Lowriders, customs, hot rods, vw's, vans, dragsters, muscle cars, bikes, trucks...
they all had a showing.
kinda lowrider

It's tough to choose which pictures to post up here.
Other people take better shots than I do...

Here's some pics of stuff that I don't get to see all the time.
not a chopper

I'd ride this bike.
bitchin vw type 2 bus

This bus was so clean.
There was another '71 camper that looked new,
but dang it no picture.
1968-74 ford econoline van

I've got a thing for the early ford vans.
Such a cool style.
I grew up with one of these so its imprinted in my brain!
Someday...
shiny engine

Gotta love show cars too.
I think this is from Paradise Road in Japan.
Must have frequent flyer miles going back and forth!
sleeper chevy drag truck

This truck smoked down the 1/8 mile drag.
I think it may have a 6-cylinder not sure.
Liked the sleeper look.
tough 1951 chevy

There were so many 50's chevy's I lost count.
This one was probably the fastest.
slingshot

The dragstrip brought some historic race cars...
twin chevy dragster

And some newer creations of the old style.
Love to see that someone can build something like this,
and have the huevos to straddle it down the strip.
pit bike

This was a cool pit bike.
Lots going on in such a simple machine.
kawasaki 750 - trouble

This was another interesting bike.
You'll probably never see me on something like this.
Not anytime soon anyway!
1929 ford roadster

Here's a couple roadsters.
The problem with me and hot rods is I can pick them apart.
Way too critical.
1932 ford roadster

This 32 had some trick parts.
I'll do a separate post on it sometime when I'm on a dry spell.

There's the first part of the day.
More to come!

how to - build a 70's street rod!

I've been holding out on you loyal readers,
well those interested in my mechanical hijinks anyway.

I have built myself into a corner so to speak,
and until I found a solution,
didn't want to throw this into my digital limbo.
1940 ford deluxe coupe - june bug

Here's the long story - at least a 2 parter.
speedway disc brake kit

Back in April I splurged and got a disc kit from Speedway.
If you know me by now that is very uncharacteristic!
I tried to piece a kit together from local car parts stores,
and other online retailers,
but there was no way to beat Speedways prices,
and it's all about the low budget build right now.
operation table

Slow forward a couple months to a CLOUDY day in October.
By now the 8" rearend was set,
the 302 engine and AOD transmission were in place.
f100/f1 brakes on 40 ford

These f-100 brakes were installed during the first go-round.
Way better than the original non-bendix 40 brakes.
The reasons for the swap were -
-get the 4.5" bolt pattern same as the rear
-better stopping power with the quicker engine
-I'm building a street rod here!
f-100 bendix brakes

These brakes are in good shape,
so they'll definitely be used on another project.
caliper adapter

This is the magic piece of the kit.
If I had parted out all the easy mechanical stuff,
there would be $20 left for the bracket pair, fasteners and bearing adapters,
or they sell the brackets for $100.
If I do the disc brake on the rusty 40,
I'm in the same boat.
I didn't even make a template.
caliper bracket and bearing adapter

There were instructions for this kit.
Did I use them?
Early on - no.
This was supposed to be a quick couple hours swap,
so why read instructions!
Right off the bat I was fighting it.
When the adapter plate wasn't lining up,
I cursed speedway.
Figured I'd have to grind the back of the spindle flat.
Then I found those 6 spacers in the bag.
Dang it they thought of everything.

Then it was the adapter placement.
Frigging thing was too small.
Where's those darned instructions?
Easy fix - slow heat the adapter and it slips over the spindle.
I've done this before,
and hot oil over a burner works better than an oven.
bearing race swap

Okay,
so now the instructions are out,
and it seems like they know what they're talking about.
Next up,
these races needed to be swapped.
rotors

Oh no they don't!
Good thing I hammered them out lightly!
The replacement was way too small.
I was about to call up speedway to bitch them out,
but it was the weekend.
Where's those dang instructions again?
After reading them a little more carefully,
only the GM rotors (4.75" pattern) need the race swap,
these are Ford/Mopar (4.5" pattern)
Friggin frick.
At least the little race is a good hammering block!
street rod brake setup

You may have guessed that it started to rain.
Poop rocks!
Still had to do the other side!
studebaker rim

The Studebaker rim fit and cleared the calipers just fine.
Too bad there's no tires!
I had no idea 185R15 tires were so expensive!
For now I'd have to run the set that matched the rear.
Or so I thought.
wide track

How could these rims not fit on the rotors?
donkey dick

Time to get out the donkey dick!
I then realized these rims didn't match the back ones.
Friggin ebay!
workin with the 34 watt

To wrap up the night,
I saw exactly what I didn't want to see.
The track width too wide!
building a 70's street rod

I should have seen this coming.
Way back when,
this old coupe was involved in a front end mash up.
The easiest fix was to swap out the 40 axle for a 42-48 axle.
Only a bit over an inch wider,
but with these fat 205 tires everything counts.
tall boy 1940 ford coupe

My plan was to save up for a dropped axle,
which could taffy pull the kingpins closer in.
The issue with the later axle isn't only in the extra width of the rims,
but also the extra width of the spring.
rain!

So there's my hint.
After a month I've drawn up a plan,
and right now it's a gamble of a good days work.

Stay tuned!

18 July 2011

let's make a bike rack!

This weekend was the "King of Clubs" car show and drag races at the Barona Speedway.
These past couple years in San Diego,
I've become a hot rod recluse - only the GNRS this year.

In Ventura you could get away with flathead powered cars.
That 200 miles of LA freeway changes the pace of the drive.
Yeah it's more mental,
we've got AAA premier which gives a free 200 mile tow,
so the safety net is a 200 mile radius of san diego!

Maybe its being content having decently running flathead hot rods.
I'd rather not prep and test them to see what they can do,
than get stuck with a broken car...

That being said,
the Barona Indian Reservation is less than 40 miles from the house,
and really I had no excuse to get my ass in gear.
After a little thought,
I decided to get the boys out to their first camp-over hot rod drag race show,
so instead of Chief we pulled out the forgotten 40.

1940 ford coupe with 16's

Last time you saw it I had thrown the mismatched 16-600 whitewalls on it.
This was another "temporary permanent deal as an easy year had already gone by.

Big and Littles
1940 ford coupe 15's on front 16's rear

I had "inherited" this set of 15's and had been wanting to test them on the coupe,
see if it helped out the handling at all.
Funny cause they are 600x15's which are really small,
compared to the huge 750LT'x16's out back.
There's almost a 5" heighth difference.

After a couple miles,
I really liked the change.
Wish they were a blackwall though.

So the night before the show,
changed all the oils - rearend, tranny and engine.
It had been a while and really needed it.

Now the kids.
What to do to keep them occupied out there?
Bikes!

bullhorn bike rack

So the morning of the show,
whipped out this custom bike rack out of scrap.
Its tough to see but it's the old hinge assembly from the tres huevos 40.

watch out

I can't believe JC Whitney didn't offer this as an accessory!

loaded with stingrays

The kids couldn't have been happier.

happy tree kids

 We were ready to go...

let's get out of here

So all packed up and ready to go.
We headed out to this crack in the earth.

road to barona
(google maps)

the 40 ran well.
It was a little warm and I was pushing it a little,
but it really needed the drive to get the juices flowing.

view from the road

Fortunately Jake had the tunes covered
with one of Papa's old transistor radios.

they're boys!

We did have to make a small pit stop,
just for a direction check and water top off.

lakeside

I wish this picture was more clear.
It had burped something fierce during a thermostat pop,
and the dirty water I had forgotten to empty in the radiator catch shot over the car.
Good times.

more views from the road

That map was deceiving.
The haul up the hill was long,
and it tested my faith in the old 221 cubic inch 59A flathead.
Yes it"s a baby.

barona speedway
google maps

Here if you look closely,
you can see why it was important to bring the bikes.
There was a ton of dirt roads for the kids to ride out.

sweet spot

Once there we were hooked up big time with a spot.
My cousin Brandon, Mario & friends like to be in the thick of things.
The bands that night were seriously 40 feet away.
Good thing the bullhorn bike rack was on there to fendoff leaners!

aftermath

This is the next day, but this was the band setup.
Creepy Creeps a burlesque show, and DEADBOLT rounded up the night.
Fun times.

I'll fill in the blanks between the last shots on the next post...
