Not a day went by in december when he didn't mention that fur coat.
I think he had re-discovered this old video...


Now amazingly enough he fits in the luxurious coyote pelt.

sloppy's ironhead chopper v-ii

Over the weekend,
we had a small shindig at my in-laws place.
My old friend Sloppy (sophorn) shot up to join the festivities.

What better way to cruise the PCH!
He had just gotten this thing tuned up,
or at least reliable enough to get back on the road.

After many years with a newer electric-start sportster,
he dug up this real deal 70's chopper,
with a good old "knee-blower" kick-start ironhead.

The engine is ran off a magneto,
and the accessory electrics off the generator.
We'll get to that later.

It's cool to see how things were done back in the day.
The 70's made some marginally cool hot rods,
cause everyone with style was doing choppers!

While another friend Danny and I checked the bike out,
Sloppy had mentioned his lights weren't reliable.
He thought it was that hot wire connection,
the one above the peace sign.

Now looking at these pictures,
it's kinda obvious what the problem was,
in the day time anyway!

Of course we decided to fix it right before he left!
With the engine not running,
there's no way to check if the lights work.
It takes a ton of dedication for a 130 lb guy to kickstart this beast!
After a couple kicks the engine started,
and yep,
all the lights were dead.

This is what Sloppy's BSA chopper was thinking now that the sportster is on the road!

Using a little one LED keychain flashlight,

one step sideways to a 34 watt light bulb,

we began to troubleshoot the electrical system.

The regulator was flopping around,

so we figured that was a good place to start.

After that was buttoned up,
Sloppy saw a broken field wire connection.
Really obvious in that above picture,
not so much in the dark.

After some quick stitching,
the problem was solved.

We were happy to hear that he made it back home no problems.
Next time I've got to take more people pictures!

mooneyes 2012 xmas lot (vii)

Last time I wrote we were at the Vons parking lot...
perich brothers (and sister): pre-mooneyes marathon (viii)
Sloppy and I jumped onto the freeway shanker style,
and headed up to the Irwindale Speedway.
I was expecting to see a caravan of hot rods and customs driving up,
but there was only one street rodded 40 sedan the whole way.
We weren't even that late it was still before 7am.
Well we got to the exit and there were a TON of cars.
We didn't preregister,
so had to find our way to the commoner entrance.

We finagled our way to the front of the line,
one of the benefits of having no fan and a steamy radiator.
Then parked in the suburbia lot away from cockfight central.

Sloppy's car is bitchin.
It's one of the earlier RPU's with the tire higher then the bed.
Pat Lash and him really solidified the nor-cal lower then low look.

We took a walk and I had no idea the show was this big.
Last Mooneyes show I went to was at the police department parking lot,
which was years ago.
This show had over a thousand cars.
In a cool way there was no real focus on one certain type.
Lowriders, customs, hot rods, vw's, vans, dragsters, muscle cars, bikes, trucks...
they all had a showing.

We snuck up to Santa Ana today and the kids had one of those life changing moments.

We paid our good madman friend Sloppy Sin an unexpected visit.

He pulled out his stash of chinagirl motorized bicycles.
The kids were a little hesitant in the beginning,
this was their first time on a motorbike.

A couple laps around the local parking lot and they were hooked.
My biggest concern was they would go too fast and careen into the curb.
I was proud they had really good control of the situation.

We lost track of time while watching them.
It was alot of fun.
Now I'm in trouble they want their own.
Sloppy even hooked them up with a motor kit.
